Ed James Smart, age 84, of Grapeland, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at his residence. He was born November 30, 1932 in Premont, Texas to parents, James Edward Smart and Melinda Jane Ivy Smart. He worked numerous years in the oil industry; owned his own business for eight years, tried retiring but wasn’t happy so he went to work for the State of Texas, finally retiring at the age of 78 from Mission Tejas State Park.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillie Smart of Grapeland; children, Edward James Smart and wife, Robbi of Houston, Neil Smart and wife, Christi of Palestine, Kathryn McKee of Nacogdoches and Cheryl Phelps and husband, Darrell of Corpus Christi; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Jane Smart; and thirteen brothers and sisters.

Memorial services for Ed James Smart will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Liberty Hill Church with Bro. Roger B. Craiker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

  1. I worked with Ed for many years at TDC. He was such a joy to work with. He was a hard worker, and he was always saying the funniest things. He kept everyone that he worked with in such a good mood with his great attitude. I haven’t kept up with him like I did when he first retired, and I regret that. I have some wonderful memories of him and will definitely keep Lillie and the family in my prayers.
