Gene Starnes

Gene Starnes Obit picEugene (Gene) Franklin Starnes of Fairbanks, Alaska, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday January 18, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born to parents Franklin and Gladyce Starnes, on November 11, 1931 in Ralls, Texas. Gene has two sisters Mary Alice and Shirley.

He married the love of his life Shirley Ann Starnes, in 1951 after meeting in high school in Salinas, California. Gene was a truck driver in San Jose, California where he bought his own trucking business: “Starnes Trucking”. Gene and Shirley had two children, Dixie and Mike Starnes. They enjoyed riding/racing motorcycles as a family and camping. In 1977 the family moved to Albany, OR where they purchased a farm, and named it G & S Stables. Gene loved his horses, and his horse community. Gene was involved with Willamette Valley Team Penning and made lifelong memories and friends. After 18 years owning and operating the stables, Gene and Shirley moved to Percilla, Texas where they lived for 20 years. Gene retired from driving truck in 1999. He then spent his days meeting friends for coffee at the Percilla store, remodeling projects around the property, and tending to the horses. Gene was active in his community church and spent Sundays after church with friends on their porch with sweet tea and coffee. Gene spent the last few years of his life living with family members in California, Oregon, and Alaska.

Gene is survived by his son Mike Starnes and wife Pam Starnes, daughter Dixie Martin and husband Rich Martin, as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who love their grandpa unconditionally. Gene was preceded by parents, Franklin and Gladyce Starnes, wife, Shirley Starnes, and sister, Mary Alice.

Gene was known for his strong work ethic, love for motorcycles, camping, horses, his faith in God, and all things western. Gene will forever be loved, missed, and remembered for his unconditional love for his family and friends, as well as the cherished moments and memories we have shared with him.

There will not be a service held.
