Lavelda Ann Ham

Lavelda Ham obit pic fixedLavelda Ann Ham began her new journey early Sunday morning, November 15, 2020. She was born April 16, 1936 to Grace and John D Sanders in Baker, Florida. She enjoyed a lifelong close relationship with her 5 siblings.  She was married to William R. Ham on November 5, 1954 and remained by his side for 53 years until his death in 2007. During the early years of their marriage, they had 6 children. Sadly, their youngest son died when he was 20 months old. They lived at various military bases in Florida, Texas, and France, until his retirement in 1970, at which time they returned to Lovelady. Lavelda was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Lavelda had a remarkable zest for life and enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved to read and was often found singing as she went about her daily activities. Lavelda was devoted to God and to studying her Bible. She enjoyed antiquing and spending time with her good friend (and sister-in-law), Bobbie Ham. She was continually active in her bowling league and many other organizations. She especially enjoyed going to her TOPS meetings with her friends. Lavelda was known for her giving nature and caring heart. She continuously supported Saint Jude Children’s Hospital, Feed the Children, and several other organizations. Lavelda always strove to better herself and increase her knowledge. She went back to school, studied hard, and on May 14, 1982 achieved her Associate of Science degree from Angelina College. While in college, she wrote many essays and poems that really impressed her professors and fellow classmates. Family was especially important to Lavelda. She made numerous trips to Wisconsin, Alabama, and Florida to visit her siblings and extended family members. She also made sure to visit her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family enjoyed many special times and good meals together. They especially enjoyed her homemade biscuits, Thanksgiving and Christmas dressing, her fruit salad and fudge, and her yearly fruitcake. Lavelda would have requested that “instead of flowers, she would hope that you make a donation to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital or that you would do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in her name”. Lavelda, also known as Grandma, G-Ma, and GG, will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.
