LaVerne Mathena

Laverne Mathena cropped and fixedMartha LaVerne Mathena, age 83, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020 at the Baylor University Hospital in Dallas.  LaVerne was born April 3, 1937 in Graham, Texas to parents, Dale Claude Shroyer and Ludelphia “Lou” Shuck Shroyer.  She was raised in a Christian home and accepted Christ at an early age.  As a child, she attended Church and Sunday School at Porter Springs Baptist Church.  LaVerne was a 1955 graduate of Crockett High School where she was a cheerleader, played volleyball and basketball, and was voted most Athletic Girl at Crockett High School.  She attended the University of Houston before her marriage to Ben Mathena, in 1958, and subsequently started a family.  Her boys were a joy to her and she enjoyed attending all of their sporting events.    LaVerne was an avid baseball fan, loving the Colt 45s then Astros, being a lifelong, devoted Astros Fan.  She was an active member of Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Secretary/Treasurer and was a Docent at the Monroe Crook House, Crockett, Texas.  LaVerne was also a member of the Esther Sunday School class and a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Crockett until failing health prohibited her from attending.  She was well versed in the Bible and spent many hours studying.  LaVerne had a wonderful sense of humor.  One of her biggest accomplishments was teaching her grandson how to ride a stick horse- they spent many hours riding as John Wayne and Paul Regret.  Her grands adored her and she them, she was their Gran.

LaVerne is survived by husband of 61 years, Ben Mathena of Crockett; children, Mark and Jill Mathena of Buna, Dale and Carrie Mathena of Clear Lake, Drew and Shannon Mathena of Georgetown; grandchildren, Travis and Jacob Mathena of Buna, Ashley, Lauren, and Brandon Mathena of Clear Lake, Brady, Linda Paige, and Lacey LaVerne Mathena of Georgetown; sister, Joyce Waldrop and husband, James of Crockett; brother, Johnny Shroyer and wife, Stephanie of Crockett; brother-in-law, Gene Mathena of Livingston; special friend, Sue Edmiston of Crockett; many special loving nieces, nephews and other relatives.   She was preceded in death by parents, Dale and Lou Shroyer; infant daughter, Martha Michelle Mathena in 1963; sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Coghlan and husband, Jim, Verna Dean Mathena.

Funeral services for Martha LaVerne Mathena will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2020 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Dr. Tim Allen officiating.  Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park.  Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.

  5. I’m truly grieved at this news, having sat beside LaVerne many times in Sunday morning worship services, and knowing so many of her beloved family. What a fine, caring lady! I can hear her laughter in my mind. Love to all the Mathena and Shroyer families. She is certainly with the Lord, fully healed and home.

  10. It was such a blessing to read the tribute to Laverne. She, Bennie, and her family were always so kind to me. Her live fir family, sports, and the Lord were so evident in her life as was her kindness and willingness to help whenever she could. Johnny, Mary, John and their Shroyer family are so dear to me.
