Richard Melvin Orr, Sr. M.D.

Dr Orr obit PICRichard Melvin Orr, Sr. M.D., age 84, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at the Houston County Nursing Home. He was born January 31, 1936 in Fabens, TX to parents, Lee Corwin Orr and Gertrude Howell Orr. After graduating from high school, Richard studied at Stephen F. Austin State University. He received his medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch in Psychiatry then served his internship at UT. Richard practiced psychiatry at Austin State Hospital for many years. He enjoyed being an Indian guide leader in Austin, Little League coach for his sons, Richard, Michael and Gary in Clear Lake City and in his younger years, was a wild horse rider in the rodeo together with his cousin George in Fabens, Texas. Richard had his private practice in Pasadena, TX for many years and after retiring, he went on to work for TDCJ for several years. He also served as a traveling doctor practicing psychiatry in 3 different states, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.

Richard is survived by wife, Patsy Orr of Crockett; son, Michael Orr of Crockett; sister, Norma Lee Nesbitt and husband, Hugh of Houston; brother-in-law, Carroll Langham and wife, Pat of Grapeland. He was preceded in death by sons, Gary Lee Orr, Richard Melvin Orr, Jr.; parents, Lee and Gertrude Orr; brother, Michael Harlan Orr; and sister, Rosemary Stewart.

Memorial services for Richard Orr will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2020 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Orr officiating. Online condolences may be left at www.callawayallee.com

  1. My sincere sympathy to Dr Richard’s Orr family. I worked with Dr. Orr for many years in Pasadena, Texas. He was an excellent doctor, very caring toward his patients. Dr. Orr had a great sense of humor, always ready with a joke. He was always fair to his staff and those who worked with him. He will be remembered at Bayshore Medical Center and also Deer Park Hospital for his psychiatric skills.
