Samuel Earl Bruce, age 68, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2018 in Angel Fire, NM. He was born December 29, 1949 in Crockett to Huelin Bruce and Dorothy Irene Currie Bruce. Sam graduated from Crockett High School in 1968, excelling in basketball and after graduation played for Angelina College’s first basketball team. He graduated from Sam Houston State University with a bachelor’s degree. Sam was an Insurance Agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Company before starting his own agency, Bruce, Dean and Shaver Insurance. He attended Harvest Church and also Moreno Valley Church of Christ.  He loved his family, cooking for them was a big enjoyment especially boiling crawfish and frying fish which catching the fish was one of his longtime hobbies. Sam fought a courageous battle with paralysis after his accident eleven years ago, October 1, 2007 with dignified strength and was always willing to go see and be with his grandchildren during their activities. Their Doodah was always a part of their life even until the end.

Sam is survived by wife of 44 years, Sandy Bruce of Crockett; daughter, Jenni Bruce of Angel Fire, N. M.; grandchildren, Averi Wichers, Nate Wichers and Noah Wichers of Angel Fire, N. M.; sisters, Pat Jones and husband, Don of Crockett, Dr. Lena Bruce and husband, Mike Straight of Texas City; brother, Larry Bruce and wife, Sara of Kennard; sisters-in-law, Debbie McCall of Crockett, Tonya Platt of Crockett, Pattie Tyer and husband, David of Crockett; father-in-law, Arlon Platt of Latexo; special aunt, Margie Currie of Kennard; uncles, Huett Bruce of Grapeland, J. C. Bruce of Grapeland; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He is preceded by son, Justin Bruce; father, Huelin Bruce; mother, Dorothy Currie Bruce; mother-in-law, Dorothy Platt.

Funeral services for Samuel Earl Bruce will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2018 in the Harvest Church with Brother Dennis Ivey and Brother Larry Bruce officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park.

Family will receive friends for visitation Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Callaway-Allee Funeral Home

  1. So sad about Sam passing away and he will be missed. My heart is heavy and I know there are many that feel the same way. I hope he is remembered as to how he made everyone around him smile. Such a character and so special. There was no limit to his humor. There was no limit as to his skills playing basketball back in the day. There was no limit as to how outstanding Sam was as an outstanding person. Prayers to Sandy, Jennie, Larry, Pat, his grand children and all his family. Rest in Peace Sam.

  11. I knew Sam as Sammy at Kennard High School. I was known then as Martha Creath.
    Sammy was always polite, nice and an all-around good guy. When I graduated in ’66, of course I lost touch with many students and didn’t know he had transferred to Crockett HS. Regardless, I remember Sammy as one great guy! Condolences to the entire family.
